Here's exactly who will be working with your child and what each person brings to the table.
Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) The clinical lead
Your child's BCBA is the architect of their entire ABA program. This is a master's or doctoral-level clinician who has completed thousands of hours of supervised fieldwork, passed a rigorous national certification exam, and holds active certification through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).
At Astute, your BCBA will:
· Conduct a comprehensive assessment of your child's skills, strengths, and areas of need
· Design a fully individualized treatment plan built around your child and your family's goals
· Supervise all therapists working directly with your child
· Review session data regularly and update goals every six months
· Lead your parent coaching sessions so skills carry over at home, school, and in the community
· Serve as your primary clinical contact — always available for questions and concerns
Your BCBA is responsible for the quality, safety, and effectiveness of everything that happens in your child's program.
Qualified Autism Service Practitioner – Supervisor (QASP-S) The clinical bridge
A QASP-S is an advanced practitioner who works closely alongside the BCBA to support your child's program. This credential, recognized in North Carolina, requires specialized training in autism services and is held by practitioners who take on greater clinical responsibility than a standard therapist.
At Astute, your QASP-S will:
· Co-manage your child's individualized treatment program under BCBA oversight
· Conduct assessments and contribute to program planning
· Supervise and support Registered Behavior Technicians during sessions
· Ensure consistency and quality across all therapy settings
· Serve as an additional layer of clinical support for your child and family
The QASP-S role means your child has more experienced eyes on their progress — not just during formal reviews, but throughout the week.
Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) The heart of daily therapy
Your child's RBT is the trained professional who spends the most direct time with them — building skills through play, structured activities, and natural learning opportunities in your home, school, or community setting.
All RBTs at Astute have:
· Completed a 40-hour BACB-approved training program
· Passed a hands-on competency assessment conducted by a BCBA
· Cleared a criminal background check and abuse registry check
· Active BACB registration and ongoing supervision
At Astute, your RBT will:
· Implement your child's individualized treatment plan in every session
· Use play-based, positive, and engaging techniques to build communication, social, and daily living skills
· Collect detailed data during every session to track your child's progress
· Build a warm, consistent relationship with your child and your family
· Share real-time observations with the BCBA so the program stays responsive
RBTs are trained to bring the BCBA's clinical plan to life in a way that feels natural, fun, and meaningful for your child.
How the Team Works Together
Every child at Astute is supported by a coordinated team:
Your BCBA designs and oversees the program, analyzes data, and leads parent coaching. Your QASP-S supports program management, conducts assessments, and supervises daily therapy. Your RBT delivers hands-on 1:1 sessions and builds the relationship your child relies on every day. And you — as the parent — are the most important member of the team. We partner with you every step of the way.
